Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure, the Ford family was looked after by her mom, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy that has been added to her resume in 1996.
